Tilly walked out of the Hopeville Gazette offices to find Jameson standing by his car, his face fixed in the smile that meant fans were incoming. A growing number of women were gathering in front of Itsy Bitsyâs. They had the air of a mob on the verge of charging.
She decided to put him out of his misery, clearing her throat loudly.
He turned to look at her, his smile transforming into a genuine one.
She gave him a stern frown. âJust to be clear, this is a professional meeting with absolutely no talk of homeopathy. Got it?â She was acutely aware that half the town was trying to lip-read, but needed to establish this before they were in any confined space together.
Jameson gave her an innocent look. âBut, Miss Bennett, a gentleman always asks after the welfare of a lady, and since I havenât seen you for two daysââ
âThe cure worked. No more homeopathy needed. Weâre done with homeopathy. There will be no more homeopathy.â She opened the car door but didnât climb in. âWeâre going to your cabin because itâs the only place where weâre guaranteed not to be interrupted or stalked . . . unless Kyrie has conned someone into driving her out to Lonely Creek Ranch. I overheard her trying to convince Mom to loan her enough money to buy a new telephoto lens yesterday.â
âYour sisterâs determination is admirable.â
âMy sisterâs determination is going to get her a restraining order,â Tilly said. âAnyway, we donât need to talk about my family. Weâre going to talk about the bachelorette party, and then youâre going to drive me to Fredericksburg. During that time, there will be no making fun of my clipboardsââ
âHave I told you yellow is my new favorite color on you?â Jameson rested his elbows on his carâs roof, putting his chin in his palms and batting his eyelashes.
âAnd no mentioning my mother chasing after you with a thermos.â
âWhich I have to return. She either needs to intern as a barista or apply to be a poisons master at some medieval assassinsâ guild. The sorting hat would have definitely put her in Slytherin.â
Tilly pinched the bridge of her nose. âI canât believe you actually tried the coffee. She could have laced it with something!â
Jameson looked way too amused for Tillyâs liking. âI hadnât thought of that. Although, I probably should have, given your familyâs penchant for drugging things. Is this a new thing the kids are doing?â
He may joke, but she wouldnât put anything past her sister. Or her mom for that matter. âAfter we finish with the florist youâll return me here to my car and Iâll go home to continue working. Hear me?â
âOf course, Miss Bennett. I have always appreciated an assertive woman.â
âAnd no doing the Darcy voice!â
âNo Mr. Darcy voice.â Jameson straightened and jingled his keys. âWe should go because that group of women standing in front of Itsy Bitsy Betsyâs look like theyâre planning on stoning you for yelling at me.â
âThey should be helping me stone you,â Tilly grumbled, climbing into the car.
